Today I’ll teach you how to sew a basic shaped plush monster. In this tutorial we’ll walk trough the entire process step by step. It is not too time consuming and if you already have an idea for a plushie, you’ll need about one or two hours.

You need 6 things

To begin with, you need a few basic tools.

Scissores

A Pen (or Tailor’s chalk)

Neddle

Thread, of course

Stuffing (or remnant)

Soft Fabric (fleece)

And don’t forget to download our free pattern. You can download the PDF, print it out and get started right away.

We want the plush toy to be soft and hugable. So make sure to use soft fabric for the body. I’ll recommend a fleece blanket, they are available in many different colors, they are cheap and you’ll get a lot of plushies from one blanket.

All systems ready? Ok, let’s bring this little softie to life.

Step 1 – The Body

Because this is a beginner tutorial, I have chosen a simple body shape.

First you have to trace the pattern on the fabric. Fold the fabric so it has two layers and make sure that the right sides are on the inside, this is important. You can either draw it freehand onto the fabric or use a paper stencil. It’s up to you.

Now it’s time to sew the two layers togehter. Use fixing pins to hold the two layers together while you sew. Also we use a trick called “right sides together” to make ugly seams invisible.

When you are finished with the sewing machine (don’t forget to let a small area open for stuffing), cut the body out. Make sure to cut not too close alongside the seam.

Then evert it for example with a chopstick or something else, therefore it’s important to let a part of the body open. To “sharpen” the edges you can use a spoon or a chopstick and retrace the edges from the inside.

Step 2 – Stuff the plushie

Use stuffing from the arts and crafts supply store or leftover fabric to stuff the monster. Don’t be stingy, the plushtoy needs a decent amount of stuffing so it won’t be too slackly later.

If you are finished you can close the hole with a oversewing stitch.

Step 3 – Add the parts

The body is ready but what is a monster if it has no eyes and mouth to scare you?

Use this template for the bodyparts. Draw them freehand on the fabric or cut the shapes out of cardboard and copy the pattern on your fabric. Now cut them out.

Step 4 – Sew parts

Some people like to sew the parts with the sewing machine right before in step one. But this is a little bit more advanced and not easy for first time plushie creators. I prefer to sew the parts by hand. This will make a more intensive experience and I have more time to listen to my favourite podcast shows.

Sew the ground layers first and then the top layers. Use colored thread to blend the seam or make contrast by using complement coloured thread.

Finished

Congrats, you have finished making your first (?) plushie. Now it is very important to have fun with the monster. Otherwise it will show you how a monster can behave.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! If you followed the steps please tell me in the comments below how it worked out for you. And of course I would like to see your cute little monsters. If you want, I can post the results here. Follow dailyplush on Twitter for more great plush tutorials and inspiration.
